Lazy Sunday

“Lazy Sunday Morning and the Truth Party”

You know, I was sitting on my back porch this morning with a cup of coffee, watching the birds, the squirrels, the chipmunks… and I realized something.

The chipmunks have a better political system than we do.

Think about it. They get up every day with one simple agenda: find nuts, hide nuts, don’t elect a fascist squirrel.

And they’re crushing it.

I’m sitting there listening to songs I’ve written about the Truth Party, feeling pretty good about life, and I thought, “You know what? Maybe this is what the beginning of a movement actually looks like.”

Because I don’t think Gandhi woke up one day and said, “Honey, I think we’re at the tipping point.”

No! He probably woke up and said, “Well, attendance at the nonviolent resistance meeting was disappointing. On the plus side, we had samosas.”

That’s how it starts.

Everybody thinks movements begin with giant rallies and fireworks and dramatic music.

No.

They begin with one person sitting on a porch drinking coffee, talking to rodents.

And I know what some people are thinking.

“John, you’re 69 years old. You started a political party. You’re writing songs. You’re doing stand-up comedy. Isn’t this a little late in life for a reinvention?”

Late?

Buddy, have you seen the alternative?

The alternative is sitting in a recliner watching cable news until your blood pressure reaches escape velocity.

No thank you.

I wake up every morning excited.

I write a blog.

I make a video.

I write a song.

I post something online.

Then I check to see if anybody watched it.

Usually, the answer is no.

But that’s okay!

Because here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t control the outcome.

You control the work.

That’s it.

People keep asking me, “When is the Truth Party going to hit the tipping point?”

I don’t know!

Ask the squirrels.

They’re the only focus group that’s been consistently supportive.

Every morning they’re out there like, “Keep going, old man! We have no idea what a universal healthcare system is, but we’re rooting for you!”

And honestly, maybe that’s the secret.

Not worrying about whether you’re going to change the world.

Just waking up every day excited enough to try.

Because one day, maybe it becomes a movement.

And if it doesn’t?

Well, at least when I’m 90 years old, I won’t be sitting there wondering, “What if?”

I’ll be sitting on a porch with a cup of coffee, surrounded by squirrels, saying:

“Damn. We gave it one hell of a shot.” ☕🐿️🚀
